Best Decks for Mega Pokemon

It feels good to be back! I’ve been away on vacation for the past week, with very little interaction with the outside world. As restful as it was, a week’s absence is more like a month away in the TCG community. But hey, this new set is considered a lower power level than other themed boosters. Surely it couldn’t have caused an upset while I was away, right?

Wait, what’s Mega Ampharos doing here?

Team Rocket’s Ambition brought alongside it an “Everyone is here” mentality to the tournament scene, where decks and/or Pokemon from previous seasons have made a surprising comeback. This has very little to do with the set itself - very few cards from B4a have made their way into the meta. Rather, this is the effect of a matured meta; the card pool is large enough that, with enough time, a larger roster of viable decks emerges. This is the best possible outcome for the likely final set to be released for B Series, with next month’s set likely being this year’s Deluxe pack.

It’s easy to see while combing through the tournament list and TRA’s data that many of the Megas introduced since October of last year are viable once again, with older variations returning with great success. In this article, we’re going to take a look at decks that showcase the relevant three-pointers in the game. There is no set order to these decks, so scroll through and find a Mega that you like. Let’s get to it!

Mega Altaria

We couldn’t start this list without highlighting the return of Altaria Box! FrogEX | Njord rightly took the gold at this past weekend’s PMPT, showing that Mega Altaria ex is still good in a psychic shell without Greninja or Darkrai. This deck is, in his own words, very technical to run. It does have good answers to most of the current meta, and requires a good pilot to make the cloud goose soar. This is easily the best Mega Altaria option out there.

Njord also pointed out in his community post that he faced five different types of Altaria. The bird has always been a force to be reckoned with, only seeing a dip in performance during Ruler of the Skies.

Mega Blaziken

We’ve returned to our roots with Mega Blaziken ex, eschewing Greninja for a pure fire archetype. Heatmor and Castform Sunny Form are amazing starters in for the Nashville Hot Chicken, and Flame Patch makes an already-low energy curve even faster.

MarHaDi won The Dark League | CELEBRATORY FANFARE this past Saturday with the above list in a field of 120 players, while FrogEX | Atomiix placed third in Umbreon99’s Aura Sphere #3. Blaziken has become the fourth most represented deck in the past three days, as it is well positioned to counter the next Mega we’ll discuss.

Mega Sceptile

Mega Sceptile ex has always been considered the grass version of Blaziken, however Butterfree as your starter makes this the more consistent mega of the two. alongside the regular grass package. The Greninja variant is technically the stronger version, however we are currently in a meta where consistency takes priority over highroll shenanigans.

The amount of top cuts Sceptile has made in the past three days is insane. Look no further if you want a mega that can set up and hit hard in no time.

Mega Manectric

I love this deck. It’s quick to set up, can deal massive damage to the bench. and has a strong end game. Mega Manectric ex can hit hard very quickly when you use Heliolisk with double Clemont's Backpack to take out basics before the opponent has a chance to set up.

The newest versions of this deck, like the one Roky came out on top with at the Sauna X Almond POG Tournament #24, run only a single Electrike. This makes your starts much more consistent, however you must be wary of any bench control by your opponent. Play around this and you’re good to go.

In many cases, Sableye and Mega Absol are interchangeable; you choose whichever mega you’d like to run. With this deck, for example, PGX | HectorDF chose Mega Absol ex for closing out the end game and taking away your opponents’s win condition like Cyrus. Though these archetypes do have a preferred dark mega, this really does come down to personal taste. It’s amazing what changing out a single card could do for an entire deck, and these two showcase this well!

Mega Rayquaza

Mega Rayquaza ex has seen less play this past week, but it’s still doing well enough at tournaments to be mentioned. DraXoZ took this to 29th in a massive 257-player tourney, reminding people that Ray is hard to stop when fully set up.

Mega Ray is a deck that has one job and does it well. In our moderately fast meta, you have to be equally quick on your feet to get running.

Mega Charizard

Mega Charizard Y ex doesn’t need fancy tricks. It doesn’t need a Greninja or stall. Once it’s ready, nothing can stop it.

This list by 𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗧 | Fasting shows the quintessential Mega Char deck. I love Mega Char because it feels like the purest form of the Pokemon TCG experience - evolve your Char regularly, apply pressure with Entei ex, and hit hard. Maddy points out that this archetype will always exist, and will always be around the 50% win rate mark. Look no further if you want a solid archetype in any matchup. Some players run both the X and Y Charizards for flexibility.

Mega Sharpedo

Winner of “The Best Enabler of All Time” award, Mega Sharpedo ex can be used in a variety of ways solely by how it can ramp up water Pokemon like no other.

The most popular variant currently is with Wild Swing Gyarados. 𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗧| Satoru Gojo gained seven wins with this list at the TBC Presents: Breakfast & Breakdowns. Ramp and pressure with Sharpedo, and discard the mega with Gary to avoid your opponent taking three points.

Mega Blastoise

You read that right! Fengar99 hit top 16 with this Mega Blastoise ex deck. Your game plan is to stall as long as possible to build up your turtle. Eiscue and the single Oricorio are there to take the hit in the mean time.

There is no energy ramp in this deck. Instead, you maintain your defensive position by recurring the ice cube with Parasol Lady and healing up with Soothing Shore. It’s a fun deck, and I’m glad to see Mega Blastoise getting some love.

Mega Ampharos

Speaking of rare appearances, Davionn brought Mega Ampharos ex to top cut this past PMPT, and I couldn’t be happier! This list uses Team Rocket’s Electrode to punish opponents for early K.O.s while softening up the bench. When two Electrodes are down, you’ve done enough damage to the field that you can clean up with the electric sheep.

It’s a solid list that’s won against some of the stronger decks in the meta. It lost every dark matchup, but has plenty of potential to stay in the meta.

Mega Venusaur

Though Solo Mega Venusaur ex is the most popular variant, Pikabrine141 got into PMPT’s top cut using this list with… Exeggutor?!?

This, much like the Blastoise deck above, uses a starter to stall while you build up your Mega in the back. The Eggs here can have a Heavy Helmet attached to it and can hold off long enough for Venu to be ready for center stage. This deck also uses a single Wally to get your toad up and running in time.

Mega Lucario

Not much can be said about this deck that hasn’t already been said. In fact, the article I wrote still holds up - build Mega Lucario ex to your preferences and find yourself easily getting wins.

Mo1245 made it to silver in PMPT #45 using the classic combo of Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee. Nx_Nemu, however, ran a Bonsly instead.

Conclusion

This is by no means an exhaustive list - I have excluded fifteen other megas solely because I’ve showcased thirteen decks in this article and need to stop somewhere. How cool is it, though, that all of these Megas have a place in the meta this season! Choose what’s fun for you and go play. Maybe we’ll play each other in the emblem event or on Match Play.
